Who are the NPCs and staff?

Most of the NPCs are staff members who were once fellow Shades in the hotel that were promoted to their positions after a time. Some of them were promoted by The Flux itself when these positions opened up. They act as agents for the hotel to ensure quality hospitality is being given to them. All of the NPCs and the player staff are around to do their jobs, though the player staff members also can freely participate in events or other activities.

What are the NPC and Staff jobs?

The Hotelier: Overall caretaker of the hotel who oversees all problems and staff.
The Concierge: Mans the front desk and telephone, greeting guests, handing out keys, Bingo cards, and other important information.
The Gardener: Tends to the plants in both the Courtyard and Greenhouse, available to help anyone getting into gardening.
The Cashier: Works at the Gift Shop and trades points or Bingos for items.
The Doctor: Attends all injuries or illnesses, and will make House Calls to private rooms for such.
The Bartender: Serves alcohol in the bar, ejects drunks and troublemakers
The Librarian: Checks out books, re-shelves books, hunts down overdue library books

ROOM SERVICE:

These Staff members may be called on when in need of help with Kinky Bingo.

The Caretaker: Tends to the needs and well-being of the other NPCs/Staff.
The Scout: Seeks new people and new things to bring to the Hotel.
The Waitress: Serves food in the Dining Hall and removes empty plates, keeps the Dining Hall clean.

Can my character harm the NPCs?

Yes and no. Most of the NPCs can take on a ghostly form at any time they want, this means they are intangible to weapons, powers, and anything else should they choose to. As players have found out, the closer someone is to The Stagnation, the less control they have over it until they are completely intangible.

Can I use the NPCs in my tags?

Yes, absolutely! Almost all of the NPCs are at their jobs during the day or can be pinged for interactions at any time. They can visit the Cashier at the shop, request a service from the Concierge. We will sometimes make a place to request an NPC in your thread, or make posts with them. Some are worth getting to know, but they can be handwaved doing their jobs at the very least. It should be noted that all hotel NPCs do have a uniform, and it can be found on the NPC Information page.

As far as The Flux and The Stagnation being used in tags, these are a bit more nebulous since they are the main Cosmic Powers That Be around here. Minor things such as messages or calls getting dropped, pictures or texts sent - things that will either encourage or discourage CR depending on how you want things to play out with another character. People are free to say that if something is broken, The Flux fixes it - or doesn't if you want to add some dramatic flair to the property damage.

What is the staff like?

The staff is a mixture of NPCs and player characters who have stepped up into the role - whether by choice or because they were chosen. Most of the NPCs are on the job for the majority of the day, and some have forgotten their very own names. When looking at some of them straight on, their features will be remembered - however a few faces will be instantly forgotten when people look away.

For those of the player character variety, these can be run by you, the players if you or your character wishes them to. (ex. The Bartender vanished, so Husk took on the job. Or The Hotelier left, and Alastor was chosen as his replacement.) There are always jobs if people need something to do to fill their time, it isn’t just limited to what is listed.

How can we get our character into a staff position?

You can either approach one of your head mods about getting a position, or we may approach you! If your character is naturally inclined to pick up a task of some sort, please don't hesitate to reach out and see about getting an official staff role. We're more than happy to help provide a way to make this happen.

If you or your character decides to leave the job, just let us know! This does not have to be a permanent arrangement.

Are these all of the NPCs?

All the ones who can be seen and will be played, yes. There are some more full-on ghostly ones who work around the hotel in various capacities. Chefs in the Dining Hall kitchen players can’t get to, maids who clean their rooms and public spaces, potentially other guests living in empty rooms, things of this nature. All of these NPCs are completely invisible to the eye, except for those who have the ability to see ghostly beings. These people will see dark shadows only out of the corner of their eye when trying to see one of these many background NPCs. On occasion, everyone will be able to witness this phenomena and it will be stated in the corresponding prompt.

How can I reach an NPC?

You can contact one of your mods in the discord server, DM, PM, or their inbox. We will occasionally offer up a way to contact them via event post as well.

Are the things that usually ping NPCs (e.g. mental break for Caretaker, injury for Doctor) limited to the Hotel's physical area?

All staff members receive a mental ping from The Flux itself if they're needed for their job. Though this is mostly limited inside the hotel.

They can be pinged within 1 block of the Hotel. When something outside that range happens, they would need to be messaged, but there is never a guarantee the message would reach them in time.

We do this to leave room for tragedies still occurring, while also lowering the odds of overwhelming the NPC players.
